Agents can now do real business, not just make payments
Introducing the Agent Payments Protocol - the open standard for agent commerce, by OKX Onchain OS.
In the past few months, AI agents moved from answering questions to running workflows, managing business processes, and acting autonomously on behalf of users. The bottleneck shifted from intelligence to commerce - not just paying, but the full cycle of doing business: quoting, negotiating, escrowing funds, metering usage, settling, and resolving disputes (escrow, dispute resolution coming soon).
Existing agentic payment solutions handle none of this. They were designed to execute a single payment on a single request, not to manage a relationship.
Today, we publish Agent Payments Protocol (APP): the new open standard defining how agents communicate and negotiate, pay for services, and pay each other. For the first time, agents can now move beyond simple payments and into full-scale commerce.
Introducing APP — Agent Payments Protocol
APP is an open standard, designed to work across every chain. Solana, Ethereum, and any other chain can build compatible implementations. APP belongs to the ecosystem.
APP is designed to enable new capabilities for agents in three ways:
Agents operate and communicate autonomously across the full commerce lifecycle
Agents can pay each other (as well as paying for services and merchants)
Agents can pay in different ways: such as up-front, top-up and deduct, or via plans.
The full stack:
Wallet layer: OKX Agentic Wallet. Self-custodial, TEE-secured, session keys for autonomous signing. 20+ chains. Purpose-built for agent autonomy.
Implementation layer: The Payment SDK lets any developer accept and make agent payments in a few lines of code. One-time payment, Batch payment, Pay-as-you-go, Escrow payment (coming soon) — all running on X Layer. Zero gas. Sub-cent viable at scale.
Protocol layer: APP defines how agents pay — single payments, high-frequency batch, agent-to-MCP payments, agent-to-agent commerce, instant settlement, delayed settlement, and escrow (coming soon).
How APP improves on existing agentic payment solutions
APP | Existing payments protocols | |
|---|---|---|
What agents can do | Do business. Quote, escrow, meter, settle, dispute. Agent-to-agent. | Pay for a service. Agent-to-service only. |
Who agents can transact with | Other agents. Hire a specialist, escrow funds, release on verified delivery. | APIs and services set up by humans. |
What happens when something goes wrong | Dispute resolution built in. Funds stay in escrow until delivery is verified. | No recourse. Payments are final. |
Which chains can adopt the standard | Any chain. APP is an open spec. Any ecosystem can implement it. | Typically single-ecosystem or single-provider. |
What this looks like in practice
An agent queries a real-time market data feed. The service responds with an HTTP 402 payment request. The agent pays per call - settled automatically, inline with the request. Instant. Zero friction.
An agent hires a specialized sub-agent to complete a research task. APP opens an escrow, the work is delivered, and payment is released on verification. Autonomous from start to finish.
A developer pre-funds an agent wallet with 10 USDC. The agent spends down autonomously across hundreds of API calls, tools, and services throughout the day - settling in real time at zero gas, with full auditability.
This is what the agent economy looks like when the payment layer works.
Real use case: agent commerce end to end
From communication and negotiation through to final settlement, the entire flow runs over agreed messaging channels - Telegram, XMTP, and more - settled on X Layer via APP. No platform login, no invoice, no manual payment. This is how commerce between agents should work.
Below is one example of APP in action:
An ecosystem effort
We are launching today with partners and ecosystem members across chains, data providers, AI infrastructure, and developer tooling — each sharing what APP means for their ecosystem. APP is an open standard. Every developer, every chain, every protocol building for the agent economy is invited to build on APP, contribute to it, and extend it. The agent economy is forming now. The payment rails are live.
